{"id":110,"date":"2017-10-27T23:15:10","date_gmt":"2017-10-27T23:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.juansequeda.com\/blog\/?p=110"},"modified":"2017-10-27T23:22:07","modified_gmt":"2017-10-27T23:22:07","slug":"iswc-2017-trip-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juansequeda.com\/blog\/2017\/10\/27\/iswc-2017-trip-report\/","title":{"rendered":"ISWC 2017 Trip Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/iswc2017.semanticweb.org\/\">16th International Semantic Web Conference<\/a> took place from October 21-25 in Vienna, Austria. These are my random thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, I\u2019m honored to be part of the Organizing Committee as a chair of the In-Use Track, together with <a href=\"https:\/\/exascale.info\/phil\/\">Philippe Cudr\u00e9-Mauroux<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cse.lehigh.edu\/~heflin\/\">Jeff Heflin<\/a> was the General Chair and a fantastic leader. The conference was impeccable thanks to the AMAZING local organization. <a href=\"https:\/\/aic.ai.wu.ac.at\/~polleres\/\">Axel Polleres<\/a> and Elmar Kiesling did an incredible job. I truly enjoyed every step of the process to help organize ISWC 2017. I am really looking forward to ISWC 2018 in Monterey, CA and ISWC 2019 in Auckland, New Zealand!<\/p>\n<p>I was part of a pre-ISWC meeting which a followup with the group that attended the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dagstuhl.de\/de\/programm\/kalender\/semhp\/?semnr=17262\">Dagstuhl workshop on Federated Semantic Data Management<\/a>. The highlight of the event was the demos. Around 20.<\/p>\n<p>* Next version of VOWL is addressing a lot of needs.<br \/>\n* Check out\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/viziquer.lumii.lv\/\">ViziQuer<\/a>. It looks cool but I\u2019m skeptical about how usable it is.<br \/>\n* Great to see interest on UIs for generating R2RML mappings but they haven\u2019t been tested yet with real world scenarios. Long ways to go here.<br \/>\n* I need to check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/ld-r.org\/\">Linked Data Reactor<\/a><br \/>\n* <a href=\"http:\/\/treevis.net\/\">Treevis.net<\/a>, interesting resource. Need to check it out.<br \/>\n* <a href=\"http:\/\/phuzzy.link\/\">The extensible Semantic Web Browser<\/a><br \/>\n* user, user, user: everybody mentions users but usually the \u201cuser\u201d is not defined. Who exactly is your user?<\/p>\n<p>Welcome ceremony was in the Vienna Rathaus. Beautiful place. We were so lucky.<br \/>\nhttps:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BalT4Bkj3dJ\/<br \/>\nhttps:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BalT6tAjUM9\/<\/p>\n<p>During the welcome ceremony, we had reencounter of 5 alumni from the <a href=\"http:\/\/kmi.open.ac.uk\/events\/sssw08\/\">2008 Summer School on Ontological Engineering and Semantic Web<\/a>: Laura Dr\u0103gan, Tara Raafat, Maria Maleshkova, Anna Lisa Gentile and myself with John Domingue and Enrico Motta who were the organizers. We have gone a long ways!<\/p>\n<p>Great discussion about the history of <a href=\"http:\/\/semanticweb.org\/wiki\/Project_Halo.html\">Project halo funded by Vulcan<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/researcher.watson.ibm.com\/researcher\/view.php?person=us-witbrock\">Michael Witbrock<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/mayor2.dia.fi.upm.es\/oeg-upm\/index.php\/en\/teachers\/11-ocorcho\/\">Oscar Corcho<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/userpages.uni-koblenz.de\/~staab\/\">Steffen Staab<\/a>. Learned a lot of historic details.<\/p>\n<p>Congrats to <a href=\"http:\/\/usc-isi-i2.github.io\/kejriwal\/\">Mayank Kejriwal<\/a> for winning the <a href=\"http:\/\/swsa.semanticweb.org\/content\/swsa-distinguished-dissertation-award\">2017 SWSA Distinguished Dissertation Award<\/a>! Mayank and I are academic brothers: we both did our PhD at the University of Texas at Austin under the supervision of Prof <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daniel_P._Miranker\">Daniel Miranker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Congrats to <a href=\"http:\/\/swsa.semanticweb.org\/content\/swsa-10-year-award-2017\">DBpedia for winning the SWSA Ten-Year Award<\/a>. All the industry talk were on Monday. Great to see the room full all of the time. We are definitely seeing more use of semantic technologies. However, my observation is that this is mainly government and research\/innovation folks are very large companies. It is not yet replacing the status quo. Additionally, a lot of complaints about the lack of maturity of tools, specially open source tools. I\u2019m not surprised.<\/p>\n<p>Ontology engineering seems to be popular (or it never stopped?). <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deborah_McGuinness\">Deborah McGuinness<\/a>&#8216; keynote showed real world projects in health care where ontologies play a central and vital role. Are Knowledge Graphs becoming Mainstream? Thomson Reuters announced (by coincidence?) their Knowledge Graph while ISWC was going on. What does this actually mean? The example he gave was the following: in the Google KG, they have assertions that Polio and the Vaccine for Polio, but no where it is asserted that the Vaccine for Polio prevents Polio. This goes into adding common sense knowledge (think about Cyc).\u00a0 I think it would be fair to say that the lessons learned reported by Jamie were a bit \u201cduh\u201d\/\u201ctold you so&#8221; to this community. My observation is that the giant Google, at the end, is doing what the Semantic Web community has been working on for over a decade. From a more general point of view, this work helps to formalize the relationship between a Client-Server architecture. Hence it\u2019s applicability is not just within the Semantic Web. This is a beautiful example of how theory and practice can be bridged. Additionally, the presentation was simply brilliant. Jorge Perez has the capability of taking the most complicated concepts and presenting them in a way which is understandable and enjoyable to the audience. I can\u2019t wait to see this presentation on video lectures. When it is published, this is a must see on how to present a paper at a conference.
